Scandals have plagued many leaders in Central and South America in recent years, as they were seen wearing luxury watches, often worth tens of thousands of dollars. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (“AMLO”) of Mexico really likes watches but, as President, he liked to stress that he was a man of the people, by pointing to a more affordable, functional watch on his own wrist. And the watch he chose was a Momentum Atlas 38 in titanium, on a simple black leather strap.
AMLO was well known for making himself accessible to answer questions and held daily press conferences throughout his time as President of Mexico. At his final press conference before stepping down, AMLO decided to raffle off his Momentum watch to one of the 86 journalists and photographers in attendance. The lucky winner of the raffle was reporter Julio Omar Gómez, of the website “Sin Punto ni Coma” who received the President’s watch in a very emotional handover from AMLO.
After the press conference, Omar Gomez was approached by several colleagues and interested parties, wanting to buy the President’s watch from him, and reportedly offering up to 1 million Pesos (US $ 50,000.00) for it! He said he turned down all the offers, as the watch was of such enormous sentimental value to him.
The original Atlas 38 sold out a few months ago. No new production was planned, as we had been concentrating our production on the new Atlas 38 Eclipse Solar version.
